What are the advantages and disadvantages of telephone interviewing?

 

Advantages:

·          Shorter time to collect data

·          Using computer-assisted interviewing reduces data entry time and errors

·          High likelihood of interviewing correct sample person

 

Disadvantages:

·          Nontelephone households will be excluded

·          Nonresponse increasing due to increase usage of technology to screen calls.

·          Questionnaire constraints: simpler and fewer questions than personal visit

·          May require extensive non-response follow-up to achieve adequate response rate.

·          Gatekeepers can prevent getting to desired respondent
