What are the advantages and disadvantages of Internet surveys?

 

Advantages:

·    Low cost

·    Self-administration increases response to sensitive questions, avoids social desirability bias

·    Reduced response or question order effects

·    No interviewer bias

·    Data processing time and cost reduced

 

Disadvantages:

·    Biased coverage – those without computers can never be interviewed, a major drawback in general population surveys

·    Sampling frames difficult to develop and keep current (e-mail addresses change often)

·    Computer literacy requirement of respondent

·    No guarantee that selected respondent is the actual respondent
